Community Description
Chebunyo is one of the largest trading centers in the district. It is located about 1 ½ hour off the tarmac road. Despite the poor infrastructure, people come from all over the South Rift region to trade and sell livestock, dairy, foods, and other materials. The community is made up of the Kipsigis people.
Imara Chebunyo Academy was started in 2008. Currently, they have 232 students and 20 staff members. They scored highest on the KCPE out of 23 primary schools in 2012 and every one of their students went on to attend secondary school.
Chebunyo Primary School opened in 1958 and is the biggest day school in the village. It currently has 459 students and 17 staff members. They scored number 6 for the KCPE in 2012, but their students continue to excel and the majority of their standard 8 students went on to attend secondary school.
Problem Addressed
The schools in the village of Chebunyo have no means of proper sanitation. This lack of facilities for the practice of proper hygiene after using the toilet causes waterborne diseases and worms, resulting in students and teachers becoming ill.
Some schools do not have a matron on the compound. Therefore, the student must pay for service at the local dispensary, which isn’t always affordable. Since both schools are public, they cannot afford to pay for any sort of water storage system for hand washing.
Project Description
This project is to install four sanitation stations, two at each of the two schools, near the student latrines.
Two long-lasting 5,000-liter water tanks (one for each gender) will be installed at toilets at each of the two schools.
The tanks will be installed on wooden platforms constructed on-site. Each tank will have a spout so that the students and staff may use the tanks to wash their hands. Soap for one term will also be provided
Roofing and gutters will be attached so that water can be harvested during the rainy season.
The project will be implemented under the direction of the Siongiroi Community Development Organization.
The materials will be purchased in Bomet town and transported back to the sites.
The construction will be done by local skilled labor, and the installations will be maintained by staff at each of the schools.
Water Charity funds will pay for the tanks and other materials.
After completion, classes will be taught in sanitation and hygiene.
Project Impact
728 people at 2 schools will benefit from the project, consisting of 691 students and 37 staff.
