This project has been successfully completed under the direction of Peace Corps Volunteer Cynthia Berning. To see the history of the project CLICK HERE.
The project was to install a bathroom at the school and two public toilets in the community.
Cynthia reports on the first part of the project:
We purchased all of the materials in March and finished the school toilets.
Cynthia then left on a trip, and there ensued some difficulty in completing the toilets in the center of the village. The community had decided that they wanted to wait and do the project in conjunction with a larger project to renovate the mosque.
The project was set back on track, when Cynthia requested that they proceed with the toilets independently. She states:
Once this was cleared up, the pit was dug and the plumbing installed within a week.
So, I’m happy to report that the two toilets have been installed and are fully usable and that at last the project can be officially called a success.
I’ve been told that the topic of sanitation has been discussed at the Friday prayers at the mosque for the past two weeks, encouraging everyone to use the public toilets instead of the fields if they don’t have personal family toilets.
She expressed the gratitude of the community:
Thanks again from myself and all the people of Iztat for helping with this project. /cite>
We in turn wish to thank Cynthia for following through with this project, and again thank The Soneva SLOW LIFE Trust for providing the funding for the project.
