This project was to improve the water and sanitation of the school latrines, provide a cover for the well, and set up drinking water sanitation stations inside each classroom.
Mary reports:
The water sanitation project at the Pethie elementary school has been completed!!
It was a relatively quick process. In one day, the school director and I went to talk to the ironworker about the well cover, and then we continued on to the city. Once there, we bought the large barrel with a faucet and plastic tubing needed for the school latrines. We also bought buckets, cups, and bleach for the classroom drinking water stations.
The director was very helpful in negotiation prices with the merchants. He also took all the materials back to the village.
The well cover was done a few days later, and one of the parents brought it on his horse drawn cart to the school. The local mason then cemented the cover on to the top of the well. There is a small door in the cover that will be used when pulling water.
One of the teachers has already done a lesson with his kids about how to treat your drinking water. They learned how to filter it through a fine cloth and then add a little bit of bleach to kill the bad stuff in the well water. The kids were really excited about it.
Also, the women have a cleaning rotation and are using the hosing to clean the bathrooms.
