The project was to build a rainwater catchment system for the school.
The project proceeded beginning with the construction of the tank stand, and proceeding to the purchase and installation of the tank. The gutters were installed and piping run between the gutters and the tank, resulting in a successful completion.
Andrea reports:
The project at St Martin Secondary did not go exactly as planned, but with the help of the deputy principal and local fundis, we were able to work out the problems.
It was somewhat difficult to get the administration motivated to finish the project within one month. I ended up doing a lot of the work running from place to place and buying parts. However, I was prepared for this, as I understand that here in Ukambani, things do not always stay on the expected course. In the end, the project was completed just a few days behind schedule, and is now in full swing.
Andrea reports on how the project was received:
The students are excited to have a rainwater system on their compound, not only because they have the water available to them, but also because it is helping to stabilize a new and developing school. The deputy principal said that “it makes them feel good.”
