Community Description
Dimi is a small village in the Imereti region of Georgia, in the western part of the country. Dimi is located about 30 minutes south of the regional capital and second-largest city in Georgia, Kutaisi. The village has two schools and a population of approximately 2,000 people.
Dimi Public School #1 has about 300 students, and 40 teachers, from grades 1-12. The school also shares its property with a recently opened Kindergarten and Pre-School. The school currently has no access to running water.
The bathrooms are situated several hundred meters from the school and have no handwashing facilities. Students are currently unable to wash their hands after using the toilet facilities, playing outside in the often-muddy soccer field, or even after gym class or before eating a snack.
Project Description
This project is to provide for the water and sanitation needs of the school. A system will be built whereby water is pumped from the local well, piped to the school, stored in an elevated tank, and delivered to a handwashing station for use by the students.
A 1,200 L plastic storage tank will be purchased and placed on an elevated platform, 3-4 meters above the ground. Pipes will be run underground to connect the tank to the existing well on the premises of the school.
An electric pump will be purchased and installed to transport the water from the well to the storage tank. The water is potable, and students will be able to fill water bottles from the tap for drinking.
The handwashing station will be built in the yard close to the bathroom facilities using bricks and cement, which will then be covered in tiles, after the tap has been installed. All labor will be a community contribution.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the tank, pump, connecting pipes, and other materials.
The work will be completed by a local builder. Transportation costs for the materials, from Baghdati, the nearest town, will be covered by the school.
The students of the school will receive trainings in basic hygiene and disease prevention.
Project Impact
This project will benefit 340 people, including 300 students and 40 teachers. In addition, it will benefit spectators and parents who attend sports competitions on the school property.
