Community Description
Huhuini Village is accessible by a good road. The village is primarily Kikuyu, and the majority of the people are substance farmers. They make most of their income from cash crops such as corn and potatoes, and many have a small kitchen garden that only supplies them with fresh spinach and kale.
Families have to travel up to 5 km for free potable water.
The Huhuini Primary School serves 398 students.
Project Description
This project is to build a rainwater catchment and storage system at the school.
The system will consist of a 3,200-liter plastic water tank mounted on a platform, gutters attached to the roof of the school, and piping connecting the gutters to the tank.
A platform has been built at the school but has not been used. The height will be increased to keep it above the water level during the rainy season.
The school has compiled a team of fathers who are skilled laborers and they will install the gutters on the roof of the headmaster’s office and will connect it to the water tank.
The cement will be supplied by the community as well as all labor needed to install the gutters, foundation and tank.
The tank, 60 aluminum gutters, and other materials will be purchased using Water Charity funds at Rasta Supermarket. Attempts will be made to secure a larger tank within the budget.
The school has given permission for a small staff to oversee water distribution to families of the school children, reaching now close to 1,000 people.
Project Impact
The Primary School has 398 total students, including a nursery school. There are 10 teachers and 1 headmaster as well, for a total of 409 direct beneficiaries.
The school has also agreed to provide small amounts of water to the families of school children, which brings the number of beneficiaries to close to 1,000.

The water tank will be sufficient to supply water to the school children during the rainy season, but will also maintain a great amount of water during the 3-month dry season.
