Community Description
Kayemor, a village of about 2,000 residents, is located just north of The Gambia in the department of Nioro du Rip and Kaolack region in Senegal. The primary language and ethnic group is Wolof, followed by Pulaar.
Located 18 kilometers from a paved road, Kayemor is the central hub for smaller villages around it, supporting a health post, a maternity clinic, a daily and a weekly market, schools, and organizational offices.
Kayemor has electricity, a water tower, and several boutiques, all of which service the population. There is a six-classroom primary school with around 350 students and a five-class middle school of about 100 students.
Kayemor is the home of the office of the Communauté Rurale de Kayemor, which includes 22 surrounding villages besides Kayemor, serving a total population of over 18,000.
Kayemor has a daily market in which numerous women from Kayemor and the surrounding villages gather to sell and purchase foodstuffs, such as vegetables, fish, and spices. This area is also where the weekly market is held in Kayemor, which draws individuals from across the Communauté Rurale de Kayemor and beyond.
There are currently no latrines for public use in or near the market, so individuals must go to their homes or to a friend’s home to use the bathroom. This can be very inconvenient, which means that some individuals do not even bother going to a house to use a bathroom, but rather go to the bathroom in the bushes or behind a tree, which is causing a sanitation problem.
There is also no place to take a shower near the market. This is a problem because people often walk, bike, or ride a horse-pulled cart for many miles along dusty roads to come to the market, and, thus, would really like to be able to clean up before selling or buying things in the market, especially since cleanliness and dressing nicely is an important aspect of Senegalese culture.
Project Description
This project is to build two public latrines and showers at the Kayemor marketplace.
The latrines will be housed in a simple concrete building with 2 stalls. The building will be 5 m by 2 m, split in half lengthwise to separate the 2 stalls. It will have a metal roof and metal doors, and each stall will have a Turkish toilet.
Both stalls will be connected via PCV piping to the septic tank dug a few meters to the side of the building. The latrines will be connected to the nearby water line.
The tank will be deep in order to ensure that it will not fill quickly with so many people using the latrines on a daily basis. Each tank will be 3 m deep by 2 m by 2 m, and completely cement-lined.
The project will be carried out under the direction of the Organization de Marsee de Kayemor. The people of Kayemor were so eager to have public latrines and showers next to the market that they started digging the septic tank for the latrines, with the hope that they would be able to find funding to help them buy the necessary materials.
Project funds will be used to purchase most of the materials necessary for the latrines and showers, including cement, rebar, and pipes.
The community will supply the necessary sand, rock, and tools, as well as provide the labor needed for digging the septic tank, making the bricks, building the latrines, and installing the plumbing.

This project will have huge benefits, in terms of health and convenience, for the entire community. It is a project long overdue, and has tremendous support from the people of Kayemor.
The structure is being built with sustainability in mind, designed to be easily serviced, and built with the appropriate materials for a long useful life.
Danielle previously completed the Kayemor Primary School Latrine Project – Senegal, in which four latrines were built at the school.
