Community Description
Kayemor, a village of about 2,000 residents, is located just north of The Gambia in the department of Nioro du Rip, Kaolack region in Senegal. The primary language and ethnic group is Wolof, followed by Pulaar.
Located 18 kilometers from a paved road, Kayemor is the central hub for smaller villages around it, supporting a health post, a maternity clinic, a daily and a weekly market, schools, and organizational offices. Kayemor has electricity, a water tower, and several boutiques, all of which service the population.
Kayemor is the home of the office of the Communauté Rurale de Kayemor, which includes 22 surrounding villages besides Kayemor, serving a total population of over 18,000.
There is a six-classroom primary school with about 350 students and a five-class middle school of about 100 students.
The elementary school, L’Ecole Primaire de Kayemor, does not have any latrines. Currently, all 350 students use the principal’s latrine, because his house is located right next to the school. Being forced to wait to use the latrine is difficult for many of the younger students and sometimes causes fights among the older students.
Project Description
This project is to build 4 latrines: 2 latrines for the girls and 2 latrines for the boys.
Project funds will be used to pay for the labor and materials needed to build 2 of the latrines, while the community will pay for the other 2 latrines.
Upon careful consideration, the community decided to house the latrines in 2 separate locations: one set of latrines for the older children, and one set for the younger children.
The latrines will be housed in a simple concrete building with 2 stalls. Each building will be 5 m by 2 m, split in half lengthwise to separate the 2 stalls.
They will each have a metal roof and metal doors, and each stall will have a Turkish toilet.
They will all be connected via PCV piping to a septic tank dug a few meters to the side of each building. Each tank will be cement lined, 2 m deep and 2 m by 2 m in size to accommodate the heavy usage.

This project will remedy the difficult problems caused by a complete lack of latrines for the students. It arose out of careful planning by the school and the community. The local participation will ensure that the project will be properly completed, and then regularly maintained.
