Kiziguro School Water Project – Rwanda

Location
Kiziguro Sector, Gatsibo District, Rwanda

Community Description
Eastern Rwanda is relatively dry, particularly during the dry season.

Kiziguro Primary School, located in the Gatsibo District of the Eastern Province of Rwanda, serves 1,126 primary students and 570 secondary students. The school is supported by a Catholic church, which is located nearby.

Similar to a technical school, the school has a nine-year basic education program, in which students attend a combined program of six years of primary school and three years of secondary school. Within the Core Curriculum, students learn about hygiene and the importance of washing their hands.

After school Tuseme clubs also promote hygiene and the environment. However, the school does not have reliable access to water and so these lessons can have little impact.

Although the school has a rain catchment system, the large water storage tanks are used early into the dry season, leaving months where the school has little access to water. During this time, students are asked to take turns bringing water for the classrooms in jerry cans. However, due to the low availability of water, students frequently bring contaminated water, which is unsuitable for drinking.

Project Description
This project is to bring potable water to the Kiziguro Primary School.

Approximately one kilometer away from the school is a community water source. Piping will be extended from this source into the school.

A tap will be built from which water will be brought into classrooms and near the latrines. This will provide a source for safe drinking and also enable students to wash their hands after using the latrine and before eating.

Project Impact
1,696 students and 31 teachers will benefit from this project.

This practical project will make potable water available to the students and teachers during the entire year. It will result in extensive health benefits as well as relieve the children of the burden of obtaining water and carrying it to the school.
