Liceul Teoretic Nestor Vornicescu Water Project – Moldova

Community Description
Lozova is a village of approximately 6,500 residents, located 42 kilometers northwest of the country’s capital, Chisianu, in the central region of Moldova. Lozova’s residents take pride in the community’s richly-documented history, which dates back to 1420.

Like their forebears, today’s residents make their living primarily through agriculture. The time-tested practices of taming the soil, harvest, and husbandry have sown deep roots among these people, who value home and family.

In addition to maintaining their connection with the past, Lozovans also value their future. In particular, they emphasize the importance of a well-rounded education.

Indeed Lozova’s high school, Licuel Teoretic Mitropolit Nestor Vornicescu, is the most vibrant center of community. In addition to hosting 540 students, the school also houses a local NGO, multiple fundraising events, and town-hall-style meetings throughout the year.

The residents have a serious interest in ensuring that their school remains an integral institution in civic life and a source that continues to provide the community’s youth with a future full of opportunity.

The school gets its water from a well on the grounds. The well remains uncovered and unprotected. This allows debris and contaminants to enter, and also represents a danger to the students.

The science room located on the second floor of the school does not have running water. Experiments cannot be properly done because of the inability to maintain a clean environment. Furthermore, contaminants from the laboratory are taken out and introduced to the general environment and population when the students leave the room without washing their hands.

Project Description
This project is to replace the cover on and protect the school well, and also to bring water to the science room of the school.
The project will be launched by installing a new cover for the well, and surrounding the well with a small fence.

Following this step, local plumbers will install a pump, which is currently in storage at the school.

The plumbers will proceed to obtain and install pipes to run water into the second-floor science room.

Next, the plumbers will install a faucet and sink in the science room.

A series of lessons on the importance of safety and hand washing in the laboratory when working with chemicals will be taught to students in classes 9 through 12. Finally, lessons will begin that educate the students on the ways they can keep their local environment clean.

Project Impact
This project will benefit the 540 students and 80 employees of the school. In addition, dozens of volunteers and visitors to the school will also benefit.

This project will improve the quality of the water used at the school by covering and protecting the well. It will also enable the washing of hands in the laboratory on entering and exiting the room. The safety of experimentation and the quality of education will be improved when such subjects as bio-chemistry, chemistry, and environmental science are taught.
