Manyagiro Water Project – Rwanda

Location
Manyagiro Sector, Gicumbi District, Rwanda

Community Description
The Manyagiro sector of the Gicumbi District is located in the northern province of Rwanda in East Africa. The village is composed of mud huts, children eager to learn, and hardworking men and women. Subsistence farming is the main source of income for residents.

Perched atop a 3,000-meter mountain, the rural area does not have running water, spigots or electricity, with the exception of a newly installed spigot at the MAFUREBO Primary School, approximately ½ km away, which was completed with assistance from Appropriate Projects.

The area once had access to clean running water. However, due to erosion and deterioration, the existing water system is damaged and out of use.

Project Description
This project is to repair the current underground piping system, improve the water collection system, and connect the water source to above-ground spigots in the Manyagiro sector.

Upon completion of repairs, community members will have continuous access to running water through a double spigot.

Community Health Workers will introduce information on the use and importance of hand washing and hygiene at ‘umudugudu’ community meetings. Additional teachings on health and hydration will be highlighted as well.

Project funds will be used to cover the costs of materials, supplies, transport fees, and skilled labor.

The community members and local government have demonstrated their support of the project and place a high value on their health and the health of their children.

On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandan citizens participate in a mandatory community service called Umuganda. The citizens of the Manyagiro sector have set aside Umuganda to dig the trenches for this project, eager to work together and to help contribute and construct a local water source.

Project Impact
Approximately 20,000 community residents will directly benefit by obtaining access to clean running water.

Comments
The restoration of a safe water supply to an entire community will have a tremendous impact. Health improvements will be attained not only in the achievement of a clean drinking water source, but also in the improvement the water source will bring about for agriculture, nutrition, and animal husbandry.

This is the third project implemented by Avery. The first two, MAFUREBO Primary School Water Project – Rwanda and MAFUREBO Primary School Water Project – Part 2 – Rwanda were successfully concluded.
