Community Description
The community of Medina Afia is located beside a banana and mango plantation. Most of the men in the community are employed by the farm. The village is home to approximately 1,300 people.
The community has an established Case de Sante, or “health hut.” Recently, they decided to expand and remodel the Case de Sante, adding six new rooms.
Project Description
This project will entail building latrines at the new addition to the Case de Sante.
The latrines will be housed in a 2.5 m x 2.5 m structure that will contain 2 stalls. Each of the two pits will be 4 meters deep, sufficient for the expected heavy usage.
The initial measurements have been made, and the village chief and elders have decided to place the latrine approximately 20 meters from the new addition.
Under the direction of the Medina Afia Health Committee, the community will provide all labor, including that of a local mason.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase materials, including but not limited to cement, sheet metal, and rebar.
Project Impact
Medina Afia’s population of 1,300 people, as well as additional people who visit the health hut from surrounding smaller villages, will benefit from the project.

This is a needed infrastructure project to support the recent expansion of services of the facility. Is there anything more important and basic than adequate sanitation facilities at the location where the community receives its primary health care?
