Community Description
Founded by a handful of Russian settlers during the reign of Catherine the Second, Pushkina village has grown considerably. It is currently home to a population of 1,142 people and has an Orthodox church, a mosque, six stores, a bar, a rural library, a gas station, a kindergarten, and a school. The majority of residents of the village work in family farming.
Pushkina Secondary School was founded in 1972 and currently has an enrollment of 149 students with 21 teachers and 10 other staff members.
The water currently available at the school has a concentration of a number of chemicals and substances exceeding healthy limits. The water is also saturated with hydrogen sulfide, giving it a strong, unpleasant odor. Because of this, students and school staff currently bring drinking water with them from home. The contaminated water continues to be used for preparing meals at school, however, affecting the quality and taste of the food.
Project Description
This project will improve the quality of the drinking water available to students and staff at the Pushkina village school. To do this, the school will install a 5-stage reverse osmosis water filter which will provide clean water for drinking as well as cooking meals.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the water filter and all related parts, including taps and drinking fountains for the filtered water, hoses, clamps, connector fittings, electrical wiring and the filter cartridge.
Items will be purchased from a local supplier and the school will pay for all related labor. This will involve dismantling the current hardware, installing the new filter, taps and water fountains, connecting the filter to the taps and sewer, installing and grounding the electrical component of the filter and finally installing a protective box around the filter.
The school will buy the necessary replacement cartridges for the filter as needed in the future.
