Community Description
Sare Bidji is a village of about 650 people. It is also the seed of the Rural Community of about 60 villages all directly west of Kolda, capital. Villages of the Rural Community unite at Sare Bidji for Council meetings and seed distribution. Sare Bidji is the local level commercial and political hub.
Malnutrition is commonplace in the region of Kolda, where WFP delivery of foods comes yearly and many children are brought to Health Posts sickly and underweight.
Moringa Oleifera has shown beneficial results when applied regularly to a diet as a nutritional supplement, improving overall health. This is due to moringa’s high value in vitamins and minerals absent in the normal diet of the rural subsistence farming family.
Problem Addressed
A water source is needed for the irrigation of the moringa garden.
Project Description
This project is to build a well in to provide water for the moringa garden.
The well will be built at a site chosen by the village elders and the moringa group. It will be hand dug, 1.5 meters in diameter, with two water basins for irrigation. The depth of the well in this field is estimated to be around 15 meters.
The well will be lined with rebar and mortar and will have the cement rings near the bottom for structural integrity. Since the well in mainly for garden watering purposes it will not have a cover.
There will be a 3-pulley system made of steel beam supports for efficacy in filling the basin and a pump is not contemplated at this time. The work will be done by a local well digger and welder.
The community has organized to create the fencing needed for the garden and will play a supportive role in the well digging with transportation of materials and needed labor.
A 2,500 tree nursery is already growing, to be transplanted at the site when the well is completed.
Water Charity funds will be used to purchase the materials and pay for the skilled labor.

Comments
With moringa cultivation at the local Health Post already present, the garden will support the role of the Health Post with a larger supply of moringa while the Health Post provides an avenue for leaf powder dissemination.
The garden will maintain a seed bank, and also serve as a training garden to demonstrate the techniques for replication, extension and create a larger-scale production.
