Community Description
The community is currently, and for the last 10 years has been, drawing water out of a dried river bed where they dig into the sand to find water daily.
These “wells” also are frequented by livestock, dogs, and other animals searching for water.
The water is sometimes treated with chlorine but since it is not always available, the community suffers from many waterborne illnesses. Last rainy season there was a cholera outbreak.
Problem Addressed
The borehole has been broken for 10 years. Although it was once temporarily fixed by the community, they could not afford replacement parts so the borehole quickly broke again.
Project Description
This project is to repair the borehole pump to full functionality.
Under the direction of the Tunga Village Water Committee, three rods and three pipes will be replaced.
The community will be provided with a rod-fishing pipe to recover the missing pipes that have fallen deep into the borehole.
Many of the parts are already available, as the local village headman has kept parts in his house for the past 10 years.
The community will provide the labor to repair the borehole and to fix up the surrounding area.
Project Impact
175 people in 33 households will benefit from the project. Also, the borehole will be available for the use of 5 additional villages.
