Community Description
Village 4 is one of the poorer villages, located about 20 km from the center/downtown of the sub-district. The terrain of the village is hilly and rocky.
Some residents of the area do own land where they grow sugarcane, corn, and cassava. There are also dairy farmers. However, the majority of the villagers work as laborers and hired hands for land owners and dairy farms.
The primary school of the area reflects the fact that the village has one of the lowest incomes of the sub-district. While the classrooms are in decent shape, the same could not be said of the school’s restrooms.
All of the three restrooms are dirty and covered with mildew. Unpainted walls are mossy and absorb water that results in constant bad odor. They are also dark and wet with toilet bowls missing in some.
Project Description
This project is to renovate 3 restrooms at the Village 4 Primary School
The plugged drain-pipe of one of the stalls will be removed and new section reinstalled to connect with the rest for proper drainage. All connecting pipes will then be cleaned and flushed, and all damaged ones replaced. The piping system then will be connected to the septic tank for proper disposal of the waste.
Toilet bowls that are chipped or badly stained from the hard water of the area will be replaced. Bases that toilet bowls sit on will be stripped of old stained tiles. Damaged ones will be rebuilt, patched, and then retiled.
The Local Subdistrict Office has 3 used bowls in good condition that it will be donated to the school.
The water tanks inside the restroom will be cleaned and then patched with cement.
Walls both exterior and interior will be stripped of old paint, patched, and then repainted.
Broken front sheet panels that hide the supporting structure of the roof will be replaced.
The doors will be sanded, and the stain will be reapplied.
Damaged tin roof panels will be replaced and patched where needed.
The work will be handled by local residents of Village 4. Skilled local workmen and women of the village will be hired to help the local volunteer labor.
Project Impact
This project will benefit 689 residents of Village 4. In addition, it will serve students from Village 16, and also serve as a meeting/gathering/event-holding place.

Comments
The improved hygiene at the school brought about by this project will create a dramatic reduction in illness caused by unsanitary conditions.
This project follows on the successful completion of the Village 1 Restroom Project – Thailand and the ICT Center/Library Restroom Project – Thailand directed by Peace Corps Volunteer T.D. Nguyen.
