Community Description
This town in Mali is supplied with water via a communal tap system. The system, however, fails from time to time, frequently in the hot dry season. The community is forced to draw water from communal wells distributed outside the town. The water is often dirty and in short supply.
Project Description
This project is to enhance two large communal wells that are currently dry. The wells were originally not dug deep enough. This project will make them functional.
A jackhammer crew will be hired to deepen each well by ten meters, ensuring year-round access to clean water.
Additionally, the top well, currently lined by shale and mud, will be cemented. Both wells will be covered with large metal covers, manufactured in Mali, to prevent contamination of the water.
This project builds upon funding contributed from other sources, and allows for the completion of the well enhancement.
Contribution by the community includes cash, as well as local materials, such as sand, water, rock, and wood for framing. The community is also providing skilled and unskilled labor.
Project Impact
In addition to providing enhanced access to clean water, this project will demonstrate to the town the power of volunteering. By collecting the contributions and assisting in the construction, members of the community will be empowered with the skills and confidence to attempt future projects within the community.

This project demonstrates our commitment to getting projects going NOW, by providing the final funding needed to start the project.
It is a critical project for the people of the town, as it will provide immediate access to clean water.
It also shows that it is better to “fix” something that is no longer working, than to undertake new construction at a much greater cost.
